Bellevue Crescent, Cliftonwood
The client had recently purchased the property and the kitchen was at basement level with the back door opening onto a small untidy basement area. We were asked to make this area into useful living space with a connection to the top lawn.
We decided to create a small dining area with added seating and a water feature. As the space was very enclosed, the acoustics suited a small waterfall as the sound of the water was enhanced to great efffect. We built a small water feature from the local brandon gritstone which, when wet, turns bright red with crystals in it which shine and glimmer by candle light.
There were a pile of leftover terracota tiles and we decided to use them as the floor in the dining area. We used four pieces of slate as the centre piece.
We then replaced the steps and built new regular ones using red bricks and slabs to connect the upper and lower levels together. The bank was then planted with aromatic herbs which could be used in cooking and enveloped the space in fine herbal aroma.
